Database backups using virtual tape volumes
نویسنده
چکیده
The time it takes for the database administrator to conduct the database recovery process directly affects the company’s bottom line. Database downtime impact can be measured in millions of dollars resulting in lost opportunity and disgruntled customers. This paper describes virtual tape technology and advantages which can be realized by the database administrator when database recovery efficiency is essential. Virtual tape offers an alternative to expensive disk storage and physical tape cartridge dependencies.

Comparison of Cloud vs. Tape Backup Performance and Costs with Oracle Database
Current practice of backing up data is based on using backup tapes and remote locations for storing data. Nowadays, with the advent of cloud computing a new concept of database backup emerges. The paper presents the possibility of making backup copies of data in the cloud. We are mainly focused on performance and economic issues of making backups in the cloud in comparison to traditional backup...
متن کاملThe IBM Virtual Tape Server: Making tape controllers more autonomic
The IBM Virtual Tape Server provides a revolutionary tape storage solution that emulates tape drives using a disk cache, providing up to 256 virtual tape-drive images and stacking the virtual tape volumes onto a maximum of 12 physical tape drives. The high ratio of virtual to physical drives, combined with the stacking of virtual volumes, provides tape storage that is both costand space-efficie...
متن کاملPerformance of a Parallel Network Backup Manager
The advent of inexpensive multi-gigabyte tape drives has made possible the completely automated backup of many dozens of networked workstations to a single tape. One pioblem that arises with this scheme is that many computers cannot backup theiì disks óver the network at more than a f¡action of the tape's rated speed. Thus, running overnight backups sequentially can take well into the next day....

We present Amanda, a freely redistributable network backup manager written at the University of Maryland. Amanda is designed to make backing up large networks of data-full workstations to gigabyte tape drives automatic and eecient. Amanda runs on top of standard Unix backup tools such as dump and gnu tar. It takes care of balancing the backup schedule and handling any problems that arise. Amand...
